Read ’em & Sip – A book club for readers who like their drinks with a twist of knowledge.
The Wicked Wolf, crowned Best Bar in Long Beach, has launched an innovative book club with a unique twist. This first-of-its-kind book club blends the joy of reading with the history of spirits and the art of cocktail-making.
We meet on the last Monday of each month (except November and December 2024, when we will meet on 11/18 and 12/16 due to the holiday season) in the cozy confines of the upstairs Wolf’s Den. Each session will feature a curated book and a suggested cocktail, mocktail available for purchase. This innovative pairing ensures that every sip adds a new layer to the narrative, elevating the book club experience.
“Read ‘em & Sip is our way of mixing community engagement with a dash of fun, a splash of education, and a twist of spirited dialogue,” says Thea Mercouffer, co-owner and self-titled Artistic Director of The Wicked Wolf. “From the very beginning, we’ve aimed to be a space for cultural exploration and community connection, and this is just another way to realize that vision.”
The December session will spotlight And a Bottle of Rum by Wayne Curtis. “From the grog sailors drank on the high seas in the 1700s to the mojitos of Havana bar hoppers, spirits and cocktail columnist Wayne Curtis offers a history of rum and the Americas alike, revealing that the homely spirit once distilled from the industrial waste of the booming sugar trade has managed to infiltrate every stratum of New World society.” And, has been the case in prior club meetings, there is often the chance to taste special book-related cocktails specially created by the Wicked Wolf’s talented bartenders.Also, at the December session, we will reveal the book selection for the January 27, 2025 book club session.
